[Thinstation-general] VNCViewer

I need to have a VNCviewer in my thinstation build to connect to a
Win7 for occassional maintenance duties that rdesktop won't suffice
for. I also need to be able to VNC in to the box so that I can run
hwlister and e-mail myself the module.list, as this is beyond the
user's ability.

I've tried the following in my build.conf but when I click on the
"VNCviewer" icon after clicking on the "VNCViewer (Listen)" icon it
shows "-listen" in the options box and clicking on the "VNCViewer
(Listen)" icon shows 192.168.11.3 in the Server box. I didn't set a
Server for Session_5 as I don't think that's needed when running it in
Listen mode is it? Session_5 doesn't appear to load VNCViewer when I
run it anyway.

I also tried running TightVNC v1.3.1 in listening mode on my PC
(192.168.1.61) and connecting to that from the TS in Virtualbox
(192.168.1.65) with the "VNCViewer" icon but that didn't work,
although I could connect to 192.168.1.68 (not using listening mode),
which is running UltraVNC 1.0.9.61 so that seems to be OK.

SESSION_4_TTTLE="VNCviewer"
SESSION_4_TYPE=vncviewer
SESSION_4_VNCVIEWER_SERVER=192.168.1.61
SESSION_4_ICON=On

SESSION_5_TITLE="VNC Viewer (Listen)"
SESSION_5_TYPE=vncviewer
SESSION_5_VNCVIEWER_OPTIONS="-listen"
SESSION_5_ICON=On

You make absolutely no sense. There is nothing rdesktop doesn't do
better than VNCViewer when connecting from a TS to a Windows box. And
then you say you want to run hwlister, but this you do only on TS and
then you might need a VNC server on the TS client which will be
xorg7vnc and have absolutely nothing to do with VNCViewer.

Well actually VNC is much better for connecting to a PC without
logging off the user, which RDP does, so when I want to adjust
something for my HTPC which displays on the TV on the other side of
the room, RDP is useless as it kicks the user off locally and then I
can't log it back on without connecting a keyboard to the HTPC or
rebooting it.

Yes, I need to run hwlister on the TS box and then e-mail the files to
myself, so I need to be able to VNC in to it to do that.

Most VNC viewers have a listen mode which allows them to act as a
server. I have no idea what xorg7vnc is or how to set it up as I've
only used variations of VNC on Windows, so if you could explain how to
set it up that would be useful.

Right, but that is a somewhat different story.

Frankly just ssh'ing in is simpler, but OK, your choice.

VNC consists of the VNC viewer (the client) and the VNC server. In
Windows they get wrapped up in one package.
To get a VNC server into TS just add package xorg7vnc. No
configuration except NET_REMOTE_ACCESS_FROM needs to be proper. In TS
it's accessible also from a java-enabled browser on port 5800 (or
5900? Getting tired...)

Thanks. I thought it would be more complicated adding the VNC server
but it sounds simple enough.

I did consider ssh'ing in but I can't work out how to transfer the
files back to myself that way.

You could just enable wright access on your pxe server. You could tftp/ftp them somewhere else. cat them to terminal would also work.
